Choi Sung-woo loses to ‘Billiard Emperor’ Bromdahl to become World Cup runner-up

South Korean carom three-cushion sensation Cho Myung-woo (Seoul Metropolitan Government) has finished runner-up at the World Three-Cushion Billiards World Cup.

Choi lost 44-50 to world number eight Tobjorn Bromdahl (SWE) in the final of the Ho Chi Minh City World 3-Cushion Billiards World Cup 2023 in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, on 28 April (KST).

Choi’s final opponent, Bromdahl, is a living billiards legend. With a total of 45 World 3-Cushion Billiards World Cup titles to his name, Bromdahl was a mountain that Choi had to climb to win the title.

The match was evenly matched until the midway point.

It was 26-26 after 15 games and Choi was showing signs of winning. However, Bromdahl’s momentum picked up from the 30th game onwards and he lost 44-50.

Choi is back on the World Cup podium after winning the World 3-Cushion Billiards World Cup in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, in December 2022 and finishing runner-up in this event.

“It was a tournament where I learnt a lot,” said Choi. I will use this as a springboard and work hard once again to show my growth,” he said.

A total of 47 Korean athletes competed in the event. Kim Jun-tae (Gyeongbuk Sports Federation) made it to the quarter-finals of the tournament and challenged for the title, but lost to Bromdal in the semi-finals and finished in third place.
